Why Orthopedic Surgery is my Dream Job


Breaking my leg at 14 months old was my first experience at a hospital, other than being born, and after that I had many more due to my health condition, specifically in orthopedics. Due to this health condition I have broken many bones in my lifetime and have seen many doctors that have either set the broken bone in place or have performed surgery on me to set it in place with plates and/or screws and going through all of this in my life made me want to go into the practice of orthopedic surgery. 

I have been lucky enough to have had amazing doctors that care about my health and well-being. So much so that they have set up seminars for me and my brother to speak to medical students about our condition and how it is living with it on a day-to-day basis while balancing school. One doctor offered me the opportunity to shadow him while he went to Honduras to treat patients, some of them having my health condition.

With all of these experiences I grew up feeling like there is no one better to help people with bone health problems than me. With me being born with this condition, receiving great care and treatment, being assisted with understanding medical prognoses and diagnoses and how to treat them. So, even though these things have caused me great hardships in life, they have also prepared me for what I want to do in life.

  Moving On As I am finishing up my undergraduate career at ASU, I find myself lost in between applying to medical school and finding a job. Finding a job is not so difficult but being employed full-time while studying to retake the MCAT may prove to be. The MCAT will require lots of study time for me as I didn't do well on my first attempt. Setting time aside for everything, studying, family, girlfriend, and time for myself is something I've always had difficulty with this. Thankful

  Thankful Since I am not going to be in classes next semester I've had time to think about my undergraduate career. All the stress, time in the library, and all the people I met and how everything has impacted me and my life. It's been a lot on my mental health, physical well being, just everything you can think of, and now it's over. I can say with utmost confidence that I do not regret doing this at all. I loved every hard, emotional minute of it. I am very grateful for having the opportunity to have attended ASU as well as GCC. I am grateful for the financial assistance of this scholarship program. I am grateful for the TRIO program, all my professors for being understanding of situations, and many more. I hope I made as much of an impact on you as you have made one on me. Living in Quarantine

Living in Quarantine Being at home all the time is something I'm used to or at least being cooped up inside, so it's not too different for me. The difficult thing now is the changes in routine, not having to wake up at certain times, driving to school and work. I now work from home on my laptop. But the Zoom meetings help, even though only one of my classes has implemented it for lectures, I wish more of my classes did that but the other classes have either audio embedded Power Points or recorded video lectures so these help as well. I also use different platforms to hold student meetings along with Zoom like Google Hangouts, Google Meet, Snapchat and so on. I feel like using these platforms like this has made things easier and has kept me sane. I am trying my best not to go outside, especially because I love the temperatures this time of year but I still do but I usually go out when it's late and I'm in my car playing Pokémon Go.
